Pomarape (4 day)

Pomarape (4 day)

in Summits
Difficulty: AD/AI 2 - 6222 m.a.s.l.

Mount Pomarape, an extinct volcano, part of the Payachatas (“two sisters” in quechua native language). Just as with the other Payachata (Parinacota, also available in the tour of Go Bolivia), the border between Bolivia and Chile passes exactly through its center.

The first ascent to this snowcapped mountain was done by Bolivian René Zalles and Edmundo García in 1946.

Itinerary 1

  • Day 1:
    La Paz Village of Sajama

Departure from La Paz to the village of Sajama in the morning. During the trip we enter the Sajama National Park where we can discover the chullpas (tombs) of the Chipaya culture, ancestors of Bolivian people in this region. We can also watch the transformation of the landscape, something indescribable. Then, we arrive at the village of Sajama.

  • Day 2:
    Village of Sajama High camp

We start the day early to take a walk by the geysers, where we can find several hot springs. After having lunch in the zone, we head for high camp of Mount Pomarape.

  • Day 3:
High camp Pomarape summit Village of Sajama

We leave at dawn attempting to reach the Pomarape summit. Once we reach it, we discover a spectacular view of the surrounding mountains with beautiful contrasting landscapes, both in the Bolivian and Chilean side. After enjoying this summit, we start descending to high camp, where a vehicle will be awaiting to drive us to the village of Sajama.

  • Day 4:
    Village of Sajama La Paz

A relaxed day. First thing in the morning we load our mules and head for Aguas Calientes, where we have a delightful time in a natural hot spring. Then, we continue our journey and pass by a lagoon, where we can see some vicuñas (animals typical of the region). After that, we go through the village of Pomarape, where we have another beautiful view of the Sajama mountain. Finally, we head for the highway to La Paz.

To participate in this tour a good physical condition is required, especially talking about high mountain climbing (altitudes above 5500 m.a.s.l.). This is an ideal route for those initiating in mountain climbing because it does not present further complications; with a good acclimatization chances to reach the summit are many.
