Description

Located to the east of Bolivia in the department of Oruro and very close to the border with Chile, Mount Sajama is among the 10 highest peaks of the Andes Mountains. Located at 6542 m.a.s.l. (21463 feet), Mount Sajama is only 417 meters below Mount Aconcagua (6959 m.a.s.l.).

Mount Sajama was a sacred mountain for the pre-Inca Carangas culture, and now is the main attraction of the first National Park of Bolivia, which was named after it (1939). Inside its 100.223 hectares (247,653 acres) there is a forest of queñua, tree that grows at higher altitudes than any in the world (from 3600 m.a.s.l. to 5200 m.a.s.l.).

In addition, you can find tombs of the Chipaya culture and fauna unique to the place: birds, such as flamingoes, duck, gulls, coots and Andean avocet, and Andean lamoids, such as llamas, alpacas, guanacos and vicuñas.

This route offers not only a journey through the snowcapped mountain, but also through a number of natural beauties of the National Park named after Mount Sajama. The itinerary comprises 4 days of discovery and adventure.

Go Bolivia offers 4 different routes inside the Sajama National Park: Mount Sajama, which includes a visit to the forest of queñua (6542 m.a.s.l.); Mount Acotango,an extinct volcano in the border of Bolivia-Chile (6052), part of the two Payachatas; Mount Pomarape (6222) and Parinacota (6132), last two combining the ascent to the mountain with visits to geysers and natural thermal springs.

  • Day 1:
    La Paz Base camp

Departure from La Paz to the village of Sajama in the morning. During the trip we enter the Sajama National Park, where we can discover the chullpas (tombs) of the Chipaya culture, ancestors of Bolivian people in this region. We can also watch the transformation of the landscape, something indescribable. Then, we arrive at Mount Sajama, pick up our mules and make a tour through the forest of queñua (tree unique to Bolivia that grows between 3500 and 5000 m.a.s.l.). Finally, we walk to our base camp.

  • Day 2:
    Base camp High camp

This day our porters arrive early because a long ascent to high camp awaits us. Passing through some hillsides and going up steep and loose moraines, we arrive at high camp (5600 m.a.s.l.) at the end of the day.

  • Day 3:
    High camp Summit Base camp

We leave at dawn attempting to reach the summit. There, you can discover a spectacular view of the surrounding mountains with beautiful contrasting landscapes. Then we start descending to high camp, where our porters will be awaiting us for the descent to base camp.

  • Day 4:
    Base camp La Paz

A relaxed day. First thing in the morning we load our mules and head for Aguas Calientes, where we have a delightful time in a natural hot spring. Then we continue our journey and pass by a lagoon, where we can see some vicuñas (animals typical of the region). After that, we go through the village of Pomarape, where we have another beautiful view of Mount Sajama. Finally, we head for the highway to La Paz.

Recommendations

To participate in this tour a good physical condition is required, especially talking about high mountain climbing (altitudes above 5500 m.a.s.l.). This is an ideal route for those initiating in mountain climbing because it does not present further complications; with a good acclimatization chances to reach the summit are many.
